Asian Business

Printer-friendly version

Commercial expertise is essential to the functioning of organistions and the economy as a whole. With the growing importance of international markets, especially in Asia, graduates with expertise in the business environment of Asia will be able to participate in this exciting and challenging area.

The social, cultural and political aspects of doing business in and with Asia have been integrated with the essential knowledge and skills of management and business to produce a commercially focussed programme applicable throughout the region.

Taken by itself, or as part of a double major with any of the other business and commercial majors offered by the Faculty of Economics and Commerce, it provides the basis for an exciting career in a market that is both dynamic and filled with opportunity.

Course Outline

Asian business can be studied as a major in the Bachelor of Commerce or the Bachelor of Economics. This includes combined courses which includes these degrees.

Asian Business introduces you to economic, commercial, social and cultural skills that are needed as the basis of a business career in the Asian region, or if you intend to work in companies that have extensive contact and trading relationships in Asia. Presented jointly by the Faculty of Economics and Commerce and the Department of Asian Studies, it offers ways to integrate business skills with the cultural awareness essential for business success in the region.

Level 1
All Economics and Commerce students study mathematics and introductory business units at level 1. To complete a major in Asian Business, you must also study an introductory Asian Business unit either at level 1 or 2.

Upper levels
Upper levels of the major include both business units (which you can target to your interest) and Asian Studies units including cultural and social studies.

Duration

Bachelor of Commerce: 3 years full time, up to 10 years part time
Bachelor of Economics: 3 years full time, up to 10 years part time

Career Opportunities

As a graduate of the Faculty of Economics and Commerce you will find a variety of career paths open to you. You might work as a stockbroker, investment analyst, personnel officer, economic analyst, or economist just to name a few career paths. You could find yourself in a small retail business, a large multi-national firm, an international bank, international mining company, computer manufacturer, consultancy, an airline or working for local, state or federal government.

Depending on the choice of your second major (most students choose to complete two majors) you could expect to work in a wide range of financial positions. Marketing, management, information management, trade and government representation are other types of positions that former graduates presently occupy.

The Faculty offers a number of majors and minors concentrating on various other aspects of business which can be combined with your Asian Business major. If you take a double major, or a double major plus minor, you will equip yourself with a range of skills that prospective employers can develop.

The Asian Business major offers a wide range of career options and is an excellent choice for those who know the area in which they want to work, but may have little idea of the final direction that will suit them best.
